![]() First, save a backup copy of the document. If you need to edit items in your bibliography, it is best to do this as a final step before submitting the document. Editing references here is also somewhat unreliable several users have reported that modifications made here sometimes do not persist when Zotero references, among other issues. References edited here will not be automatically updated by Zotero if you change the data in your library. While it is also possible to edit the text or formatting of bibliography references in this window, doing so is discouraged. You can then use the arrows to add or remove items. To do this, click the “Add/Edit Bibliography” ( ) button again to open the Edit Bibliography window: In rare cases, however, you may want to add uncited sources to your bibliography (e.g., items included in a review but not cited in the paper) or remove items that are cited in text but which should not be included in the bibliography (e.g., personal communications). Orphaned items can exist if they were inserted by a collaborator from their My Library or a group you don't have access to or if you they were deleted from your Zotero library.Īs you add and remove citations in the document, Zotero will automatically update the bibliography to reflect your changes. Items that are orphaned (not connected to any items in your Zotero database) will not have an “Open in My Library” button. In the Add Citation dialog box, you can click on the bubble for a cited item, then click “Open in My Library (or the Group Library's name)” to view the item in Zotero. ![]() Press Enter/Return again to insert the citation and close the Add Citation box. The item will appear in the dialog box in a shaded bubble. Matching items will be shown for each library in your Zotero database (My Library and any groups you are part of). Matching items will instantly appear below the dialog box. Start typing part of a title, the last names of one or more authors, and/or a year in the dialog box. The citation dialog is used to select items from your Zotero library, and create a citation. Pressing the button brings up the citation dialog. Use Revert All to reset all reference in the bibliography to the original references in your Zotero library.You can begin citing with Zotero by clicking the “Add/Edit Citation” ( ) button. This manually edited citation will not be updated if you make any changes in your Zotero Library. Caution! This will manually edit the reference in the current document. Select a reference on the right column and edit this reference in the free text box at the bottom of the window.This will update the bibliography according to the changes you have made in your library. Then click the Edit Bibliography icon in your Word document, select the relevant reference in the right hand column, then click ok. Edit the details within your Zotero library.To edit the details of references in your bibliography: Select a reference in the middle or right column, and use the arrows to move it in or out of the reference list. Note: this will not add or delete the in-text citation from your document.To add or remove an item to/from your reference list: From thereafter, each time you insert a citation it will be added to your reference list in the correct order. You only need to do this once for the document. This will start building your Bibliography. Once you have inserted your citation, place the cursor at the end of your document and click the Insert Bibliography icon. Add page numbers in the Page field, or Suppress Author, as required. ![]() In the red search box (see the image below), click once on the citation (Wakeham et al., 2012), this will open the edit box.Click an in-text citation you want to edit, then click Edit citation icon from the Add-on tool bar.You can also click Z to select Classic View, this will bring you to the Zotero library, select a reference from your Zotero library and click OK to insert this citation.Zotero will insert it into your document. Simply click on the reference you want then press enter. Zotero will search your library for the appropriate reference. Enter a keyword, title or author name in the search box.There are two ways to insert your citations: To add a citation to your Word document, click the Insert Citation icon. The first time you use the Insert Citation button in the Zotero Toolbar, you will be prompted to choose your referencing style. Open your Zotero library while using Zotero with Word. ![]()
